OTHC Members,

#1 Vipers sweep the whole Kielbasa, while #2 Hatters feast on Spam in this Season’s OTHC Playoff run.

After much hype, anticipation, and smack-talkin’[1], the Fall 2010 OTHC Kielbasa Cup final game arrived between the Vipers and Da Brewins, and the two (2) fans in attendance were not disappointed with what turned out to be a tight, fast-paced affair from the beginning… Even with the motivation of Rick “Mods” Malcolm on the bench (and his wife in the stands) for the Brewins[2], it wasn’t enough as the Vipers walked away with a 2-1 victory…

There were long stretches in the initial stanza where there was no whistle, and both teams making hard charges to the net, only to be denied by both keepers… Then, with 2:15 remaining in the first period, Keith Danielowski juked by three Brewins, and was able to beat Brewins goalie Dan Hudson through the crook of his arm to give the Vipers a 1-0 lead at the end of one…

The second period started out much like the first, with many chances at both ends of the ice… One Brewin chance saw the winger cut from the boards toward the goal, and, using the defenseman as a screen, fired a low hard shot that was heading to the bottom right hand corner of the net, only to have Viper keeper Doug Lazecki throw his glove down, which the puck barely touched, and have it ring off the post – and then they followed that up with a shot from the right boards right on goal, only to have Lazecki snag it and hold on to it for the faceoff… Hudson also made many brilliant saves in the period, leaving the score 1-0 at the end of two…

In the third, the Brewins didn’t let their foot off the gas and kept coming at the Vipers… With a little more than 12 minutes to go in the game, Brian Bachman came down the right wing and, with two Viper defensemen covering him, he cut towards the goal… Lazecki tried to cover the short side of the net, and as Bachman tried pulling it back out front, the pick kind of slid off his stick, right by Lazecki, off the post, and in to the net to tie the score 1-1[3]… With about eight minutes to go, there was a scramble in front of the Brewin goal, a shot came off Joe Murphy’s collarbone, the puck dropped to his feet[4], and Murphy slammed it in to the net for a 2-1 Viper lead… The Brewins called a time-out with about two minutes to play, and pulled Hudson with about a minute and half to go… They really did give it a valiant effort, but were not able to get any shots through the Viper defense… There was a bit of frantic play in front of the Viper goal near the end of the game, and with about five seconds to play, the puck flipped up in the air and was coming down to Steve Hyjurick (who was sitting on his kiester), and he tried to swat it away – only he swatted it right at the Viper goal, which caught Lazecki off-guard, but he was able to squeeze it between his arm and his ribs… The Vipers iced it, leaving 0.1 second on the clock, which the Vipers were able to kill on the ensuing faceoff…

[1] In all my years of playing sports, this is the first time that I’ve talked pre-game shyte and have it work out well…

[2] Who, quite honestly, was a pawn in the head games played by the Viper brass…

[3] I don’t know if you’d call that a “shot”, but they don’t ask “how”, they ask “how many”, right?

[4] Hudson told me later that he had no idea where the puck was…
